First Calgary-Buffalo Newsletter of 2024

Hello Calgary-Buffalo!

I want to start by wishing everyone a happy 2024, Lunar New Year, and Black History Month! I think the last newsletter that we sent out was before the election; so much has happened since then. Perhaps it’s best to focus on what we have accomplished. We made significant gains by winning 14 seats in Calgary and forming Alberta’s largest ever official opposition. Now that we’ve had time to rest and recover, let’s rebuild our strength as a movement and prevent this government from destroying the province we call home. 🧡

First elected as our leader in 2014, Rachel led the Alberta NDP to defeat a 44-year conservative dynasty, becoming the first NDP premier of Alberta. Now, she has decided it’s time for a new leader with a renewed vision to take on the UCP’s extremist agenda. We are so sad to see her go, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge some of the great work she has done, with your support, for our province.

Rachel Notley cut child poverty in half.

She raised the minimum wage to $15/h.

She kept our healthcare and schools running effectively despite a collapse in oil prices, the likes of which we had never seen before.

She worked with the federal government to get the first pipeline to tidewater built in 50 years.

She started construction on the Calgary Cancer Centre.

She shepherded a booming renewable energy sector.

She phased out heavy polluting coal-fired plants.

She was instrumental in enhancing Canada Pension Plan benefits to make our retirements more secure.

She even made our beer better by supporting a nascent craft brewing industry.

I’ll cheers to that. 🍻

Soon we’ll be choosing a new leader with a renewed vision to carry us forward. Will you join us for this exciting journey?

To secure the unique opportunity to vote for the next leader of our party, you must sign up to become a member by April 22nd, 2024.

CPP Townhall

Thank you to everyone who risked showing up late to their Super Bowl parties and came out on Sunday for this important event!

If you missed it, we have one more townhall coming up in North-Central Calgary on Saturday, February 24 at 11:00 AM – Mount Pleasant Community Association. You can RSVP here.

If you cannot make it to one of our townhalls but would still like to sign our petition to stay with the CPP, click on the link below to sign our online petition.

Updates from the Legislature

The UCP’s annual budget (April 1st, 2024, to March 31st, 2025), which lays out their fiscal spending plan, will be delivered on February 28th, the first day of the spring legislative sitting.

Stay tuned for me to introduce a Private Member’s Bill this session.

Arts and Culture News

Next week I’ll be visiting Lethbridge to connect with Arts, Culture, and Historical Societies stakeholders. We’ll be hosting a roundtable with several organizations, touring local venues, and hosting a mixer with area reps. I’m looking forward to connecting with creative minds and hearing about the exceptional work being done in this community. Follow me on social to see what I get up to!
