Joe and a few Calgary-Buffalo volunteers about to hit the doors

A message from the President of Calgary-Buffalo

Happy new year! As we slam the door on 2025 and look forward to a happier, better 2026 for all Albertans, I just want to take a moment to say thank you.

This has certainly been a year full of challenges, but there has also been some amazing progress here in Calgary-Buffalo, and none of that would have been possible without the dedication of volunteers and supporters like you.

From knocking on doors to making phone calls, sharing our message online, and showing up at community events—you’ve helped keep the spirit of hope and progress alive in Calgary-Buffalo. Your commitment reminds us that when we work together, we can build a province that puts people first.

Please, if you haven’t yet, renew your membership. Members are the backbone of our organization, and from voting in a nomination contest to special events, it’s an easy way to be a part of the team!

As part of our year-end fundraising efforts, we helped out our neighbour riding Calgary-East get election-ready. We plan to continue supporting East’s efforts, so if you’re planning on making a donation, please consider supporting them by using this link.

Thanks again, and see you on the doors, at an event or out in the community!

New Year, New Membership

Hey folks, if you haven’t already renewed your annual Alberta NDP membership, this is just another gentle reminder that memberships expire on December 31 each year. However, if you started or renewed your membership after September 1, it will not expire until the end of the following year.

Membership gives you a say in the future of our party and opportunities to participate in Alberta's New Democrat events.

You can update your membership here.

Legislative Recap from MLA Ceci

I wanted to share a quick recap of the recent fall session of the Alberta legislature which started Oct. 23 and wrapped up on Dec. 10.

Here’s what the UCP government prioritized this fall

  • Using the notwithstanding clause four times to override teachers’ bargaining rights and the medical rights of trans children, doctors, and parents (Bill 2, Bill 9).

  • Forcing teachers back into crowded classrooms by imposing an already rejected contract, with no improvements to resources or conditions (Bill 2).

  • Opening the door to American-style, two-tier health care by letting doctors work in both the public and private systems — creating a pay-to-play model where only those who can afford it get the care they need in a timely manner (Bill 11).

  • Forcing a switch from AISH to ADAP, slashing monthly income for people with disabilities (Bill 12).

  • Granting themselves authority over the courts, including immunity for the Justice Minister himself in order to centralize power and place ministers above the law (Bill 14).

  • Voting against wage increases for Alberta’s 114,000 minimum wage earners (Bill 201), while giving raises to nine parliamentary secretaries (Bill 12).

  • Voting against capping auto insurance rates (Motion 504) and strengthening Alberta’s energy grid for more affordable energy (Bill 203).

  • Voted against new transparency and accountability rules, saying no to ethical governance (Bill 202).

Albertans have been very clear that they want their government to help with rising costs, provide better health care, properly fund our education system and make sure every Albertan has access to a good job.

Albertans want an ethical, competent government but the UCP is only focused on their self-serving agenda, taking away the rights of Albertans, and thinking they are above the law.

Alberta’s New Democrats, however, never stopped fighting for the real priorities of Albertans. We introduced legislation to raise wages, protect workers, strengthen health care, make energy more affordable, as well as new ethical and accountability rules for government.

In 2026, Albertans can expect us to keep fighting for what matters most. We’ll never stop pushing back against Danielle Smith’s cruel and out-of-touch agenda, and we’ll continue to focus on what Albertans need from their government.

Volunteers Needed!

With the weather becoming more challenging, although intensely beautiful at times, we are looking for volunteers interested in doing some calling from the comfort of your home.

If you are interested in this type of low exertion but highly engaging volunteer opportunity, please email [email protected] and we’ll be in touch.

We will also be participating in the next Day of Action on January 24 with doorknocking, calling and gathering together with volunteers! Check the website to sign up!

Looking for a donation to a silent auction?!

If your non-profit organization has a fundraising event coming up and is in need of items for a silent auction, please send an email to [email protected] with all the necessary details and we will see if we can help out.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support as we pick up steam towards the next election!

In solidarity,

Joe
